Cover Letter for Resumé


  1. Tailor your letter for the desired position. This will involve researching the company and the specifics of the position.
  2. Avoid writing in the passive voice.
    • Example: This experience enabled me to…
  3. Use active description and make yourself the subject of each sentence.
    • a. Example: In this internship, I demonstrated sound judgment and problem-solving skills on a daily basis.
  4. Do not use contractions.
  5. Grammar mistakes are not allowed.
  6. Do not indent paragraphs on business style letters.
  7. Always use Times New Roman, 11 font.
  8. Keep your letter short, simple and straight to the point.
  9. Be sure to sign your letter in black ink.
  10. Attach your resume.
  11. Use good quality paper that matches your resume (and envelopes).
  12. Delete these rules and do not include them on your letter.

The first paragraph of your letter details your reason for writing this letter. This paragraph is a short paragraph, usually 2-3 sentences. Points to include – Why are you writing and for which position are you applying, if you have a mutual contact mention the contact by whole name, show from your research why you are interested in this position or organization.

This paragraph explains why you are qualified. Highlight some of your relevant experiences and qualities as they relate to the position for which you are applying. Choose 2-3 points about specific experiences and accomplishments to support these points. If you failure to include these points you are not making yourself stand-out. Make strong connections between your abilities and the company’s needs.  This paragraph may be made into two paragraphs to detail your experience(s).

This is a short 2-4 sentence paragraph.  Refer to your enclosed resume. Request an interview. Include information on how you can be contacted; include your telephone number and your personal email address (ensure your email address is a professional one). Thank the employer for considering your request and express gratitude for them taking their time to read your correspondence.

Laura Flannigan suggested I contact you concerning the Customer Service Clerk position available at Eastern Arbor Institute. I am inspired to pursue my customer relations interests at Eastern Arbor due to your organization’s reputation as a prestigious, innovative and growing company.

My diverse and intense academic and leadership experiences make me a valuable asset to Eastern Arbor.
